The differences from the Excel and later Coastal hulls

Just wonder what the differences are there between the early Excel 23' hull and the later Coastal hulls. I know that they did away with the step in the hull rear the transom and lowered the outboard mounting by making a notch in the top of the transom.

Maybe Seabob can give me a little insight.

Barry,
If you are talking about the original Excel 23 Walkaround that, EVENTUALLY, became the Wellcraft 24 WA...nothing changed at all.

The WA was never a part of the Coastal hull form. But she sure has lasted!!!

Correct Bob; she was never a Coastal in name. She came standard with such items as a vacu-flush head, vhf radio, canvas, trim tabs and various other items. Her shortfalls were that she drifted straight ahead and took on water at the stern thus filling the floor fish boxes and making her butt end heavy--we even had one sink due to that. Wellcraft came up with a fix kit to cure the problem after a couple of years worth of prodding from us on Lake Erie and others. She was barely 23 feet let alone 24, but a good value nonetheless. Not one of Wellcrafts best efforts though.

Jim, just had a member on Classic Aquasport looking for a 225 or 245 Explorer ask about a...230 Coastal. Posted a pic, and I'll be damned, an old "Excel" 24 WA (remember, started life as a 22 WA). I told him ImageImageImage

The 22/23/24 was a great value, but, honestly? Never really a Wellcraft...

Jim, remember the the original Excel 26, became the 26 Martinique, until WC finally came out with the 28 Martinique to replace it? That took a few years...

And great to see you here!!

Yep, remember all that; but the 22 wa was the i/o version and was never an excell; sort of looked like the 23/24 wa excell though;

Thanks for the reply guys.
Sorry about my confusion with the Excel becoming a Coastal.
We really like the boat for day tripping.
I notice that wellcraft put a notch in the transom to lower the mounting of the outboard on later models.
Our boat (96) does have this notch.
Was this to get the cavitation plate lower?

Opps ... Sorry I meant to say that our 96 doesn't have the notch in the transom. There is a later model Wellcraft with the notch in our marina. When the boats get back in the water I'll try to get a picture of both boats to compare. Right now we are under a blizzard warning. All the boats around here are put away for a least another month.
